Hackers target Twitter

What do Barack Obama, Britney Spears, and Bill O’Reillyall have in common? All were among the 33 celebrities who had their Twitter accounts hacked yesterday.

This followed hot on the heels of the weekend’s Twitter phishing attempts, and a number of reports of people being DM’d affiliate links and marketing tools.

What can you do?

  • Treat your Twitter account like your email, don’t give out your password to third party sites.
  • Change your password regularly.
  • If you receive a spammy DM from a friend, check if they really sent it. It could be that their account is compromised without their knowledge.
  • Beware of phishing. Check the URL of the site. Be sensible!

Good recommendations. And don't believe everything you read on twitter! From news of Steve Jobs' death to Bill O'Reilly being gay. Some of it just isn't true. As the saying goes, “trust, but verify.”

Wow Mr. President Obama had a twitter account, well too bad it was hacked, but I can’t seem to figure out how phishers break through the firewall of twitter, anyway thanks for reminding us that this could happen, I’ll definitely be careful of the sites I’m going..

I’m wondering why the hacker did it though… It’s not like he will gain access to their bank accounts or such, so why?

Great post. I especially found it interesting. For this matter, once I discussed with one of my friends, not only about the content you talked about, but also to how to improve and develop, but no results. So I am deeply moved by what you said today.
